Music & Movement for Seniors 2:30-3:30pm
Dance and Song for Seniors is now re-named Music & Movement for Seniors to better align with the class format.
Explore the joy of movement and music in a lively class that combines easy-to-do movement inspired by a wide range of dance styles and group singing to piano accompaniment.
Movement components are drawn from the Dance for PD® program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group and provide a fun way for anyone—no matter their mobility—to increase coordination, flexibility, balance, and freedom of movement. All dance material, much of which is done seated, is adaptable for people with varying levels of physical ability.
Familiar Broadway show tunes and classic popular songs provide the musical elements. In addition to being enjoyable, singing and vocal exercises can offer benefits for articulation, breath support, and even memory.
The class offers a congenial, supportive, and thoroughly enjoyable way to connect with your creative side—and with others—as you sing songs by composers such as Rodgers and Hammerstein and Irving Berlin and enjoy movement inspired by everything from ´40s swing to Broadway to improvisation. No dance or singing experience is needed, and caregivers are welcome to participate.
The class is taught by Robert Sacheli, a teaching artist in the Dance for PD program trained at Mark Morris Dance Group, and musician-composer Roy Barber, who leads a Parkinson’s choir in Chevy Chase sponsored by the National Capital chapter of the Parkinson Foundation.
