Music & Movement for Seniors 2:30-3:30pm

Music & Movement

Explore the joy of movement and music. This lively class combines group singing to piano accompaniment with easy movement that is inspired by a wide range of dance styles.

Movement components are drawn from the Dance for PD® program, developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group and provide a fun way for anyone—no matter their mobility—to increase coordination, flexibility, balance and freedom of movement. All dance material, much of which is done seated, is adaptable for people with varying levels of ability.

Familiar Broadway show tunes and classic popular songs provide the musical elements. Singing and vocal exercises, in addition to being enjoyable, offer benefits for articulation, breath support and even memory.

The class offers a congenial, supportive and fun way to connect with others and with your creative side, as you sing songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein and Irving Berlin and enjoy movement inspired by everything from ´40s swing to Broadway to improvisation. No prior dance or singing experience is needed. Caregivers are welcome to participate.

Robert Sacheli, a teaching artist in the Dance for PD program, who trained at Mark Morris Dance Group, and musician-composer Roy Barber, who leads a Parkinson’s choir in Chevy Chase that is sponsored by the National Capital Chapter of the Parkinson Foundation, teach the class.

This class meets every Wednesday for 9 weeks (March 20-May 15) from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Register in advance.
