What’s a Village?
A Village is a network of neighbors helping neighbors. It’s typically a nonprofit, member-based organization that offers services and activities to older adults that live in a specific area. Villages assist members to live independently by providing services from volunteers. Villages often also organize social, educational, and wellness events to support the wellbeing of older adults. Why Are Villages Needed?
A 2010 survey by AARP found that nearly 90% of older adults in America want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. The Village model helps older adults to age in a place of their choosing, connected to their communities with the practical supports and tools they need to create successful aging of their own design. Village members consistently report a positive impact on their well-being and quality of life as a direct result of their participation in their Village.
Villages are well positioned to improve the population health of the communities they serve. They offer a range of benefits for individuals and the broader community. By providing a network of mutual support, social interaction, and access to resources, villages help residents maintain independence, reduce social isolation, and enhance their quality of life. This, in turn, benefits the community by fostering a more vibrant, connected, and inclusive environment.
