CC@H Members are special people. We invite you to read their stories and get to know the amazing people of our village.

Judy and Mike: Enjoying the Stages of Life

For over fifty years, Judy and Mike have called Chevy Chase home. They raised two children here and have seen first-hand the area’s exceptional growth.

They were members for five years, took a break to pursue other interests, and rejoined when it was the right time for them.

Now retired, Mike is an active volunteer, assisting members with grocery shopping, prescription pickups, and handy work. He loves giving back, noting that everyone is friendly and welcoming. Mike also enjoys attending CC@H's bridge group, which he appreciates for its low-key atmosphere and diverse skill levels.

Judy, who retired from a career in teaching, continues to work at a church in Georgetown. While her current job keeps her busy, she looks forward to becoming more involved with CC@H activities in the future.

Roberta, 400x400

Roberta: Master Gardener

Roberta joined Chevy Chase at Home in 2023, but she has been part of the Chevy Chase community for much longer—54 years, to be exact. She lives in Section 5, in a welcoming Underwood Street home surrounded by a flourishing garden she and her late husband lovingly developed over decades. Together they raised two children, and Roberta remains closely connected to family, friends, and neighbors.

Professionally, Roberta spent 51 years teaching literature at American University and is a specialist in modern British and Russian literature. A committed feminist, she also served as the first director of AU’s Women’s Studies Program. Though formally retired, Roberta continues teaching popular courses at OLLI, sharing her love of literature with eager learners.

At CC@H, Roberta quickly became an engaged and enthusiastic participant. She joins in at Thursday Happy Hours, on Friday walking group outings, Movie Group discussions, and the CC@H quarterly Newsletter. In 2024, she took on leadership of the Gardener/Naturalist Group—a perfect fit for a newly certified Master Gardener. Under her guidance, the group has grown, connected, and flourished, much like her own garden and her connections with the CC@H community.

Bernice and Joel: Creating an Extended Family

Bernice and Joel have called Chevy Chase their home for more than 60 years. They have a rich family life, with four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

They've been part of the CC@H community for more than 10 years. They were among the first members from their area to sign up. They originally became Social Members, but after a number of years upgraded to Full Membership.

When asked why they’ve been involved with CC@H for over a decade, they explain with one word: People. They enjoy the social events, trips, and the sense of community. "Everything that CC@H offers, we like," says Bernice.

After busy careers as a social worker and running a home decor business, they value the ease that retirement brings and their independence. As Full Members, they appreciate the ability to request a ride or get assistance with household tasks from CC@H's dedicated volunteers. This allows them to rely less on their children and grandchildren. Bernice has nothing but praise for the volunteers. "The volunteers are amazing. I’d like to invite them all over for dinner!"

For Bernice and Joel, CC@H is an extension of their strong family values, providing a network of support and friendship.
