Meet Our Volunteers

So many wonderful people volunteer with us! Get to know what volunteering means to them.

Lou: I Can Do That!

After decades of working for NATO in Luxembourg, Lou returned home and needed to build a new life for himself. Rejecting a quiet retirement, he found purpose by volunteering with local organizations. Lou now volunteers with CC@H, assisting his neighbors with a wide variety of tasks.

Some requests are physically demanding, like moving heavy boxes or furniture. Others involve using ladders for things like changing light bulbs, which can be too risky for some members. He's even up for taking out the trash.

One of his trash runs led to a beautiful friendship. For two years, he took a couple's trash bins and recycling to the curb each week. During quick chats, he and the husband bonded over their shared interest in geology. When the wife passed away, Lou was invited to her memorial reception, a testament to how a small act of service can lead to a lasting connection.

Lou finds volunteering with CC@H incredibly fulfilling. "It is a good feeling," he says. "It touches you."

Nathan and Family

Nathan and Family: Three Generations of Service

Nathan has been a pillar of CC@H since its founding 16 years ago, serving as a board member, volunteer, and advisor. Working with CC@H started as Nathan’s passion project. Now it has blossomed into a cherished family tradition.

This multi-generational service began with an iPhone. When a member needed tech help, Nathan enlisted his 14-year-old grandson. This simple act introduced his grandson to the mission of neighbors helping neighbors. Years later, when Nathan retired from the CC@H Board, his daughter Deborah stepped in to continue the family legacy, creating a powerful trifecta of intergenerational service.

Now a Board member and volunteer herself, Deborah sees the value in her family's involvement with CC@H: "I am honored to be part of something that is so important to my dad. He is such a caring connector of people and a man of action."

Cory, Liz, and Clare: Friendships Deepened

The neighborhoods of Chevy Chase bring people together in unique ways. Cory, Liz, and Clare all live on the same street and knew each other before they started volunteering at CC@H. Through volunteering with us, their connection runs even deeper.

Cory was the first to start volunteering. She encouraged her friends to join. "I told them how much I liked it, and they both said, 'Great!' " she laughs. Liz, her next-door neighbor, signed up next. When Clare retired, she was happy to jump in too.

All three appreciate the flexibility CC@H offers, allowing them to volunteer on their own schedules. "You don’t have to commit to a specific ongoing day," Cory explains.

Beyond convenience, the real reward is the connection. Liz and Clare agree that a favorite aspect of their volunteer work is getting to know their neighbors. "The conversations with members ... they’re always pleasant and express so much gratitude," Clare says.

Their commitment extends to supporting each other, too. When Cory had to travel unexpectedly due to a family emergency, she called on Liz to cover a member’s appointment. This act of neighborly assistance highlights the supportive community that CC@H creates. We’re a network of neighbors, helping each other along the way.

Catherine, member, 400x400

Catherine: Making the Journey

Catherine began her time with CC@H as a volunteer. Catherine was inspired to serve by her mother, who was raised in a small Irish village with a long tradition of neighbors looking out for one another. An 18-year resident of Chevy Chase, Catherine found CC@H a “perfect fit” for her desire to quietly assist those who need a hand.

She then became a Social Member as a way to further support the community. She also wanted to join in the fun events she was hearing about and get to know the members better.

Catherine continues to volunteer, assisting members with car rides to appointments and technological support. For her, it’s an opportunity to build connections in the neighborhood and meet residents and neighbors she might not have met otherwise.

She committed further to the community by joining the CC@H Board. This spirit of service has even inspired her youngest son to volunteer his time. He photographs events for the CC@H newsletter and annual report.

Members can also volunteer by serving on committees, leading a shared-interest group, or helping out at the office.
